The charismatic tenor Vanya Abrahams made his highly successful European debut in the summer of 1997 at the Bregenz Festival. He appeared as
Mr.Abrahams made his operatic debut in 1995 as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at the Liederkranz Opera Foundation in New York. He also appeared as Sergeant in Manon at the Sarasota Opera, Fiorello in Barber of Seville at le Grand Théatre de Genève, Lead in James Rolfe’s Beatrice Chancey at Edmonton Opera, Gastone in the Royal Opera of Canada’s production of La Traviata, The Messenger in ROC’s Aida, the 4th Voice in the Pocket von Nuremberg’s new creation Smiling Carcass and the role of Chime in the critically acclaimed Scourge of Hyacinth at le Grand Théatre de Genève/ Mexican National Opera, directed by Robert Wilson. Vanya also participated in the final workshop of John Murrell and John Estacio’s Filumena at the Banff Centre for the Arts, in conjunction with Calgary Opera. He was featured in the opera movie Fig Trees by award winning director John Greyson and most recently has returned from Victoria where he workshopped the role of Othello in Out of the Box Productions, The Iago Project.
Vanya was a member of the original cast of the Tony award winning production of Show Boat, directed by Harold Prince, which inaugurated The North York Performing Arts Centre in Toronto and opened at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway in 1994. He also performed in the U.S. National Tour of Ragtime, which opened in Washington D.C. in April 1998. He made his debut in London with the BBC proms in a concert performance of Porgy and Bess at the Royal Opera Hall.
As a concert artist, Mr.Abrahams has been acclaimed for his recitals at the Bar Harbor Music Festival; Port-au-Prince Music Festival in the Martinique; Cape Town, South Africa and the educational series I Sing America sponsored by the Mobile Opera, Alabama.
A native of Montreal, Mr. Abrahams attended McGill University and has further studied with Darryl Edwards, Richard Hughes, Marlena Malas, Mary Morrison and Stewart Hamilton. He attended the Opera Studio at McGill and the Sarasota Opera Artist Apprentice Program under Victor Derenzi. He was also a participant in the inaugural season of the Shakespeare as Opera program at Banff Centre for the Arts. He is currently under the tutelage of Kevin McMillan.
